Electrolysis for Hair Removal

Electrolysis for Hair Removal

Electrolysis is the only method of permanent removal of hair according to the FDA and the American Medical Association. Any other methods are temporary in nature and may have undesirable side-effects. Here, we will examine the alternatives and why electrolysis is a better option.

Briefly, electrolysis accomplishes hair removal by damaging the hair-growth tissue by inserting a very tiny electrode into the follicle. It does require multiple sessions and, because hair can grow for a variety of reasons, the results and number of necessary sessions can vary by person.

Waxing

While electrolysis is not pain-free, technology has allowed it to gradually become less painful throughout the years. Additionally, topical anesthetics can be applied to the skin prior to the electrolysis to minimize the amount of pain felt.

Contrast that with waxing. A technique with which comes a well-documented amount of pain. The internet is full of videos of guys experiencing waxing for the first time. For the most part, the only way to lessen the pain of waxing is mind over matter which is really just another way of saying that there is not a way to lessen the pain.

Furthermore, waxing is temporary and electrolysis results in permanent removal of hair and is much less painful. This means that waxing must be done year after year, session after session.

Liquids or Creams

Medically referred to as chemical depilatories, liquids or creams are usually applied on oneself in the privacy of their own home. Using a chemical or a combination of chemicals, like calcium thioglycolate or potassium thioglycolate, the liquid or cream weakens the hair the hair to the point that it can be wiped off.

It’s important to note that the root of the hair follicle remains in the skin and not only will it grow back but it can be seen still. This is especially true if there are a many in a small space. Essentially, this is the same as shaving meaning that the hair will grow back in a matter of days. But that’s not the biggest downside.

Oftentimes, the chemicals used can cause a skin irritation and otherwise be harsh on your skin. It may also darken the skin. At the most, electrolysis may leave a temporary redness. Furthermore, the “pain” that one might feel during electrolysis is better described as a “tingle.”

Shaving

Well, if shaving were a desirable option, it’s unlikely that a discussion about electrolysis and why it’s the best option would not be necessary. Not the least because it’s a temporary solution. Also, because it’s just not a great way to spend time. Depending on where you get your information, most men do not like to shave. Much more women do not like to shave.

Oftentimes, electrolysis is considered in circumstances that can be described as unfortunate, especially for women. Depending on the woman, shaving beyond the armpits and legs, depending on the season, is already too much. Electrolysis is the best option for permanently removing hair and that goes double if the hair is in an area where it should not be.
